Already 400 years ago at the time of the Republic of Venice Istrians knew that their indigenous variety refošk (refosco) was something special. And so did the Venetians – in the best vintages they called it Renero from Izola and taxed it three times more than other wines. Nonetheless, it was a wine reputed to have medical benefits and was reserved for the Patricians and Doges of Venice. And the same is true today, not every vintage is good enough to make Renero, but when the vintage is great this exceptional wine can be made with the selection of the best grapes of refošk from our vineyards.
