Aged in seasoned oak barrels for nearly five years, Dobro has developed a pronounced aroma with layers of dark fruit, subtle oak, and hints of vanilla. “In the glass, it has a dark, opaque ruby color with scarlet edges. The bouquet is multi-layered, with very ripe red and black fruit, Mediterranean herbs (thyme), white pepper, and chocolate. There is a slight touch of vanilla, and a bit of volatile acidity may only slightly bother a purist. In the mouth, the wine is warm and expansive. There is an interplay of ripe fruitiness, herbal notes, and spiciness. The wine is rich, almost dense, with tannins that are noticeable but soft, and the freshness adds to its lively character. A juicy and sunny wine for pairing with large cuts of meat.”

Primož, a Rojac family member, grew up amidst the vineyards that his father nurtured with international varieties, creating the revered Stari d'or red. When Uroš Rojac took the helm, he shifted focus to local varieties but continued to age barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.

Primož, blending his childhood experiences with his expertise, meticulously tasted through these barrels. His mission? The creation of Dobro Rdeče is not just a story of heritage and tradition; it's a narrative of reunion and collaboration between two brothers who chose different paths. Primož, a member of the Rojac family, grew up on the family estate, deeply immersed in the world of winemaking. While he ventured into law and entrepreneurship, his brother Uroš continued the winemaking legacy. This wine marks a new chapter of cooperation, blending Primož's passion for accessible, high-quality wines with Uroš's winemaking expertise. It symbolizes the harmony of their combined skills, creating something truly unique.
Heritage: "Vines Rooted in Tradition"
Nestled in the rolling hills of Slovenian Istria, each vine at the Stari d'or vineyard is a testament to a rich narrative. This land, blessed with a unique microclimate and fertile soil, has been the Rojac family's canvas for generations. Their commitment to ecological and sustainable practices ensures every grape is a pure expression of this terroir.
The Rojac Estate is most famous for its wines made out of Refošk and Malvazija. However, the founder Bruno Rojac have devoted one of his most picturesque vineyards to international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. He thought it would be a pity not to show them all the Istrian sun. And we at RURALL thought it was a miss for the world not to enjoy those grapes.
The red blend by Rojac which we are rediscovering here was initially named after the vineyard which derives the name from the hill where it is located. Stari d’or means Old gold and the hill was named by Napoleon at the beginning of the 19th century when his soldiers discovered the ruins of a 2000 years old Roman road crossing this hill/vineyard and, allegedly, gold along its way. The finding of gold was never confirmed but maybe they indented the vineyards that were planted already at that time.
